Is wind dangerous for a drone?

Wind is a factor you shouldn’t overlook when it comes to protecting your drone and ensuring optimal safety. There is no set limit on wind speed for drones. The maximum wind speed at which a drone can fly depends mainly on the type of drone you own. Depending on the model and brand, the maximum wind speed ranges from 13 km/h for the most wind-sensitive drones to about 50 km/h for the most wind-resistant ones.

In addition, if the wind is fairly steady, it will be easier to control your drone; however, if the wind is gusty, it will be difficult to compensate for it, and you could risk a crash.

As you can see, the effect of wind on your drone really depends on the drone itself—its weight, size, wind resistance, ability to compensate for movements, and so on. It’s best to consult your manufacturer’s manual directly to make sure you meet the manufacturer’s specifications.

Can rain damage drones?

Drones and rain don’t mix, but some drones are more resistant than others. It depends on the motor used in your drone. A brushed motor is more affected by moisture, whereas a brushless motor is much less sensitive.

However, as a general rule, avoid flying your drone when it’s raining or the ground is wet.

Even a single drop of water that gets into your drone’s electrical system can cause a short circuit. It’s therefore best to take every precaution against humidity, rain, and even snow—the latter introduces an additional factor: cold.

Can I fly my drone when it’s cold?

Yes, it is possible to fly in cold weather; however, this is an important factor to keep in mind before and during your flight. As with the factors mentioned earlier, sensitivity to cold depends on your drone.

For drones manufactured around 2015, it’s generally accepted that they shouldn’t be flown at temperatures below 0 °C. For newer drones, they can operate at temperatures as low as -10 °C without significantly affecting flight time.

This is due to the batteries used and their chemical composition. Newer generations handle low temperatures better and sometimes include self-heating batteries, allowing them to withstand low temperatures more easily and for longer periods.

Cold temperatures therefore affect the battery’s capacity and, consequently, flight performance. This impact reduces your flight time; we estimate that temperatures below 0 °C will reduce a drone’s flight time by 5%. A 20-minute flight could be reduced to 16 minutes; the lower the temperature, the more your battery will be affected, and your flight time will also be significantly reduced. You could risk your battery shutting down completely, leading to a crash.

So be sure to take the necessary precautions by keeping your battery warm before the flight and monitoring your drone’s parameters during flight. If in doubt, don’t fly—it’s safer that way.
