HOW DOES A SPECTACULAR DRONE WORK?
Show drones—those fascinating flying machines that light up the night sky during special events, particularly drone light shows— require very precise planning and preparation beforehand. Instead of traditional fireworks, these drones—equipped with LED lights—create dynamic, colorful formations in the sky.
Preparing and Programming Drones
It all starts with planning and designing the show. The designers use specialized software to choreograph the drones’ movements, ensuring that each drone flies in harmony with the others to form images and animated sequences. This step is crucial because it not only defines the show’s aesthetic but also ensures flight safety.
Once the design is complete, the next step is to program the drones. Each drone is programmed with precise instructions regarding its flight path, speed, and position at every moment of the show. This is done using advanced software capable of managing hundreds, or even thousands, of drones simultaneously—as we were able to do recently with our performance featuring 1,000 drones.
Drone Communication and Operation
Entertainment drones use advanced positioning systems, such as GPS, to maintain their precise position in the air. They constantly communicate with a central computer via Wi-Fi, which can adjust their flight paths in real time if necessary.
In addition, the drones are equipped with batteries that are both lightweight and powerful to maximize their flight time. They also feature high-intensity LED lights that can change color quickly, creating spectacular visual effects.
Production of the Show
Before the show begins, each drone is calibrated and tested to ensure it is functioning properly. This step is essential to prevent potential accidents, particularly drones crashing during the show. There are numerous settings that must not be overlooked before flying a drone, such as checks on communication, the positioning system, and the performance of the associated batteries and LEDs.
During the show, the drones take off simultaneously and perform the pre-programmed choreography. Their movements are perfectly synchronized, creating a variety of shapes and patterns in the sky. Throughout the show, the central computer monitors the flight paths as needed to ensure a smooth performance and safety.
Safety and Regulations
Drone shows must comply with strict regulations, particularly regarding aviation safety and air traffic control.
As a result, the organizers are working closely with local authorities to ensure that the show poses no risk to the public or to other aircraft.
